Cap ships really should not be able to use smartbombs at all I think. They take away from one of their drawbacks which is long targetting times. If not take them away then they should be able to only fit cap ship sized smarties which hammer their cap mercilessly (as SBs do to most ships). Makes sense too...consider how big a cap ship is. Should take more power to pop off a SB around a ship that is 12km long (or whatever they are...bigger than the range of an SB though).

Why the hell were you close enough to get SB'd if you know they can use SBs?
Can't speak for the OP but the common method is for the Mothership to sit on top of the gate and smartbomb people as they warp to zero. IIRC they can pop cruisers and smaller like this almost everytime. Not sure how BCs fare...guessing they would probably live if they jump right away.

Yea, ghad forbid that anyone engage brain and use the scanner to see that his sitting at the gate to smartbomb ppl
Except there is nothing you can do versus this. Even if you see him at the gate you cannot get by. Just dock or SS and quit EVE till he leaves?
Or do you consider calling up a sufficient force to run a Mothership off (cuz no way you will kill it no matter what you show with) a viable option? "Hey guys, can't play so everyone drop what you are doing, find your combat ships, assemble, fly over here, scare mothership off so I can warp through gate then go back to what you were doing."

Originally by: VanNostrum how can you scan other side of the gate? (ie another system)
He gets people warping in to the gate. Generally not those leaving it. So you can scan ahead to the gate you are travelling to.

Originally by: Viridian Onyx I don't know what you people do when there's a gate camp, then. Should CCP "fix" all low sec areas so nobody can camp? The risk of flying in lowsec is that there's a good chance you're going to get the PEWPEWs comin' at you.
If a Nyx wants to sit at the gate and pop noobs, well, it's their 25b ISK.
Besides, it's not like there's a lot of them.
Mustering a force to run off a camp of 3-5 pirates in battlecruisers/battleships is MUCH easier than mustering a force to run off a mothership (requires more people). With the 3-5 pirates a fun fight might ensue. With a mothership at best it'll run away till you leave as there is no reasonable means of stopping it (likely he'll see the gank squad coming anyway and just safespot). So essentially you need to muster a large force, have them run over to wherever this is to make the MS safespot for a few minutes till you clear the gate.
What's more I have a chance at running the camp of 3-5 pirates in normal ships. Might make it, might not but I can do things to get a shot at it. Nothing you can do to run a SBing mothership parked at a gate short of finding yourself a BC/battleship and tanking it to make that run (which may not be an option depending where your stuff is).
EDIT: An yeah, not a whole lot of them at the moment but over time that number will only increase.

Originally by: dalman Second, it's not really extremely hard to kill a mom.
How many motherships have gone down to date? Two? Three? And those were in 0.0 with massive fleets and dictor bubbles and such.
Methinks MS are pretty damn safe overall and low sec motherships especially so.
I agre at 25 billion they should not be a pushover and take a concerted effort to kill but they should not be untouchable solopwnmobiles either.

low-sec moms that are camping gates are by game-mechanics alot more vulnerable than those used in 0.0
No bubbles in low sec so in practice the Mom is much safer in low sec despite other game mechanics arrayed against it.
Can you imagine a Mom soloing in 0.0? Or, put a better way, would you risk your 25 billion Mothership in 0.0 camping a gate by yourself?
